Confederate Naval Yard Historic Marker [1]

A state historic marker stands [2] amidst new development [3] in the first block of West Trade St. It marks the location of the Mecklenburg Iron Works which was leased to the Confederate Navy during the Civil War by the owner, John Wilkes. After the war, Wilkes regained ownership and operated the factory there until he sold the building to the railroad and moved operations to West Trade Street.
