West Charlotte wins state championship

The Charlotte Carnegie Library was built in 1903 at 310 N. Tryon Street and is shown here decorated for Mecklenburg Declaration Day. Tryon Street was often one of the main streets in the parade routes. The exact date of this photograph is unknown.

The American Legion Memorial Stadium in Charlotte was completed in 1937 and seats over 15,000 people. The Shriner Football games and numerous other events take place every year. Also featured in the postcard is the Armory House of the National Guard.

The first class officers of West Charlotte High
West Charlotte High School opened in 1938 at 1415 Beatties Ford Road, where Northwest Junior High is now located. When it opened, 389 students were enrolled. Fourteen faculty members taught under the leadership of Principal Clinton L. Blake. The school housed grades 7-12.
May 31, 1963 - A young, energetic black preacher named Martin Luther King, Jr. speaks in Charlotte to a gathering of six black high schools. Just 10 days earlier, Johnson C. Smith University students marched downtown to protest segregation, laws that separate people according to race.
Educational opportunities for men were primarily designed to train them for a profession. In Charlotte, there are a number of business schools, including Charlotte Commercial College, Kings Business College, and the Wharton Normal and Industrial College.

July 15, 1972 - The Charlotte Three are convicted of firebombing.

Charlotte's first automobile show was held the week of April 11, 1921, in the Standard Oil Building, located on the corner of West First Street and Cedar Street. Forty-nine cars and trucks were exhibited by 47 dealers, and there were exhibits by 14 accessory firms.
Now that the Civil War has ended, refugees find their way back home. Mary Anna Morrison Jackson takes up residence in a spacious house shaded by oak trees on Charlotte's West Trade Street. Mrs. Jackson is a war widow. Her husband, Confederate General Thomas A.
Fifteen hundred Mecklenburg men and boys go to work at Charlotte's Confederate Navy Yard, where shells, gunpowder and ammunition, called ordnance, are made. The navy yard has been moved from Norfolk, Virginia to Mecklenburg County to be near the iron works, and farther from enemy troops.
March 28, 1870 - As Confederate General Robert E. Lee and his daughter, Agnes, pass through Charlotte, they are greeted by a welcoming crowd. They have just visited the Warrenton grave of Lee's daughter, Annie.
May 18, 1954 - More than 60,000 people crowd into Charlotte's Freedom Park to hear President Dwight Eisenhower speak. His visit is part of the annual Meck Dec Day commemoration.
