According to the 1900 United States Census, 55,628 reside in Mecklenburg County. Of these, only 18,091 live in Charlotte. There are 4,190 farms in the county, and that’s where most people live. A farm laborer earns approximately $14.64 a month.
 The Realty Building (1907) on the right in the main photograph was on the corner of Trade and Tryon. It became known as the Independence Building in 1920.

Banking has always been very important to Charlotteans. A good financial center enables small businesses to grow and attracts other businesses to the area. 
At one time, segregation-- either enforced or implied-- permeated every aspect of life in Charlotte, including in its churches. Prior to the Civil War, enslaved persons attended the First Baptist Church for whites.

This photo was taken on the front steps of barracks # 5 at Camp Greene in May of 1918. These soldiers had performed a program at the Selwyn Hotel in Charlotte the prior week. From left to right -
