James McRacken

Death Details/Burial/Memorial Services: In an article in The Charlotte Observer dated 8-6-1961, James McRacken was described as a hero that saved a 9th century town, Mayenne, France, from destruction. The Germans had blown up the other bridges into town. In an effort to save the last bridge, Private McRacken cut the demolation wires and faced certain death from the artillery and small arms fire. He fell dead in the severed wires.In 1961, the citizens of Mayenne invited Mrs. McRacken and his daughter, Myrtis, to attend a ceremony honoring Private McRacken.

Paul Ken McCraw

Death Details/Burial/Memorial Services: Killed at Tarawa from the explosion of an enemy mine, struck while working to place his anti-aircraft gun. Burial on Nov 28, with a simple Protestant Episcopal service and salute. Memorial marker at Punchbowl National Memorial Cemetery in Honolulu, HI.

Lenn McRae

Death Details/Burial/Memorial Services: He was killed in action in France. The memorial service was held at Belmont Park Methodist Church on September 17, 1944. His body was returned to the America aboard the U. S. Army transport Greenville Victory in June 1948. His body was returned to his father.

David Meacham

Death Details/Burial/Memorial Services: Funeral services were held in November, 1943 at Douglas and Sing Mortuary. Rev. S. K. Brazil, pastor of Thomasboro Baptist Church officiated as well as Rev. P. T. Dixon, pastor of Brevard St. Methodist Church. Internment will be in Elmwood Cemetery.

William Montgomery

Death Details/Burial/Memorial Services: He was discharged from regular Army in 1939. He enlisted in the recruiting service in June, 1940 and became a warrant officer in Atlanta, GA. He drowned in Panama City. Funeral was held March 2, 1944, at Hovis Funeral Home. A memorial service was held at First Baptist Church on July 14, 1946, for 15 members who died during WWII.
