John Higgins, Jr.

Death Details/Burial/Memorial Services: This pilot from South Somerset, MA, was killed at 3 pm., while on a routine training flight. His A-20 went down near the Piedmont & Northern Railroad Co. tracks about 10 miles west of Morris Field. He was alone in the plane, which burned after the crash.

John Huddleston

Death Details/Burial/Memorial Services: He was killed in action in air combat in the South Pacific area.

Daniel Iverson, Jr.

Death Details/Burial/Memorial Services: Killed in an airplane accident off Vero Beach when two bombers collided in mid-air. A veteran of the battle of Midway, where his bomber was hit 219 times, and of Guadalcanal, where he was badly wounded.

Francis Hill

Death Details/Burial/Memorial Services: In 1943, he joined the Army Air Corps. He transferred to the Navy in early 1944. He was killed in a motorcycle accident on Feb. 17, 1944 or 45, near Pensacola, FL. Funeral held on Feb. 20 in the Presbyterian Church in Grenada, MS, with internment in Woodlawn Memorial Park.

Edward Skillet Holt, Jr.

Death Details/Burial/Memorial Services: Commander of submarine USS Bullhead in Lombok Strait, Java Sea that failed to return on schedule. Said to have been the youngest submarine Commander in the Navy. Made 11 war patrols on submarines. Memorial service at Norfolk NAS on Oct 27, 1946 and flowers strewn at sea. Memorial service at Myers Park Baptist Church Sept 15, 1946. Memorial marker at Ft. McKinley, Manila, PI.

Death Details/Burial/Memorial Services: Fatally hurt by a hit-and-run driver at Cherry Point. Funeral services at the home on Oct 6, 1943. Burial at Elmwood Cemetery.

Gilmer Holton, Jr.

Joe Hughes

Death Details/Burial/Memorial Services: He was killed in action. He was the first man of the 117 city employees in the armed services to be killed. A portrait of Joe Hughes, sketched by Carl Holliman, the identification officer of the Charlotte Police Dept., was given to the new American Legion Post in Charlotte, named in his honor, on 4-4-1946. A smaller portrait also done by Mr. Holliman was presented to Mrs. Hughes. Flags were flown at half staff in honor of Howard Hughes in Charlotte on 4-4-1946.A memorial service was held at Parkwood A.R.P. church on 5-7-1944.
