Death Details/Burial/Memorial Services: He was killed in action. He was the first man of the 117 city employees in the armed services to be killed. A portrait of Joe Hughes, sketched by Carl Holliman, the identification officer of the Charlotte Police Dept., was given to the new American Legion Post in Charlotte, named in his honor, on 4-4-1946. A smaller portrait also done by Mr. Holliman was presented to Mrs. Hughes. Flags were flown at half staff in honor of Howard Hughes in Charlotte on 4-4-1946.A memorial service was held at Parkwood A.R.P. church on 5-7-1944.
