  • During the early years of busing, disruptions take place at almost every Charlotte-Mecklenburg school.
  • Schools receive bomb threats. Tensions between black and white students often lead to racial riots.
  • Following a racial riot, East Mecklenburg High School’s white principal D. K. Pittman orders all students to class or off the campus.
  • Seventy-five black students begin to walk home fearing that the city prison bus might come for them. Skirmishes break out between police and students.
  • Later that week, East Mecklenburg’s white principal retires.
