He and Frank L. Allen designed and constructed the emblem in front of the 9th Co. mess hall at Camp Greene. He was a champion swimmer who had done the circuit of Seal Rocks at San Francisco, considered one of the most difficult swims in the country. He participated in the Camp Greene swim team and did an exhibition at the Charlotte Country Club to raise money for Troop E of the Red Cross.
