Killed by a German naval officer while trying to rescue fellow seaman after their ship was sunk by a submarine.Listed on the tablets of the missing at Suresnes American Cemetery in France.Alternate death date of October 2, 1918 given.A water oak was planted on the grounds of St. Martin's Episcopal Church in Charlotte in 2/1919 in his honor.
