Biographical Notes: 
Joseph Sands was approached by Mr. E. L. Durham of the Harley-Davidson Motorcycle Co. in Charlotte to hold a motorcycle race in addition to other field events held on Thanksgiving Day in 1918. The request was turned down by Colonel Macomb. Nowitsky was the Asst. Adjutant during this time and wrote that Col. Macomb had disapproved of this idea.
