He served overseas in the military for fourteen months. While an employee of Highland Park Manufacturing Company, he worked as a porter and also collected mail and handled money for the company.His sons graduated from Second Ward High School in Charlotte, and 'Joe' also graduated from Johnson C. Smith.He was a member of a local quartet that sang on WBT during its early history. He owned his house at 611 South Caldwell, Charlotte.
