His name appears on the city draft roll. These draft cards have not survived. He was black and 22 years old. He was one of 69 Charlotte negroes ordered to report for service on August 1, 1918. He was sent to Camp Greene and mobilized within a few days. He died of pneumonia while stationed in France. He was survived by a wife, 5 sisters and a brother. He was a negro. His address was 300 S Myers.The same day that news came of Haywood's death, his parents received a telegram saying that their daughter, Minnie Sparks, had died in Denver, CO.A memorial marker at Suresnes American Cemetery in France lists him as Missing in Action.
