Biographical Notes: 
He could have been exempt from the service because he was studying ministry, but he returned from his studies in Chicago and reported to the Mecklenburg County draft board and did not claim exemption. He was the first man drawn in the Mecklenburg County lottery and one of the first ten men to enter the national army.
