Excel was named for a singing evangelist, who came to Charlotte for the first time with Sam Jones. Excel was listed as married to Stella in the 1914 Charlotte City Directory, but his obituary shows that he was single when he died. He is on a list of soldiers who were going to be sent to Camp Greenleaf at Ft. Oglethrope around 7/4/1918. His body arrived in Charlotte on 11/18/1918, and his funeral was on 11/22/1918. His father left for Ft. Oglethorpe as soon as he could, but he was unable to get there before his son died. Excel had been at Ft. Oglethrope for several months and held a position of responsibility there.His name appears on the city draft roll. These draft cards have not survived. He was white and 28 years old.
