He met his wife in Charlotte, while she was attending Elizabeth College, studying voice.Enlisted as a Private in the Quartermaster Corps in 1917. He was in the campaigns at Rochefort, St Mihiel, Vede Toul, Verdun and Meuse-Argonne. He was honorably discharged from Ft. Oglethorpe for color blindness.
