Death Details/Burial/Memorial Services: He had volunteered as a Chaplain, but he was denied due to his age. He went overseas as an officer and was killed in the first invasion of troops on the beach in North Africa. He was killed in the heroic action of diving into the enemy trenches to put the main machine gun position out of action. He was buried in the U. S. Military Cemetery near Ft Kasba, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. The Young Mens Bible Class at First Presbyterian Church set up a gift at Union Seminary to go each year to the student who is selected for his strong personal influence. On August 15, 1945, the North Carolina House of Representatives adopted a resolution of respect and adjourned in his honor.
