William Carpenter, Jr. [1]

Death Details/Burial/Memorial Services: He was captured crossing the Rapido River on the night of January 23, 1944. He was believed to have died as a prisoner of war, while moving to another camp. He had previously been in Stalag 2-B in Hammerstein, near Koslin. He and others were hit by American fighter pilots who mistook the prisoners of war, who were walking on the highway, for German soldiers. His remains are interred in the U.S. Military Cemetery Neuville-en-Condro, plot 1, row 11, grave 275. This cemetery is located 9 miles southwest of Liege, Belgium. A memorial service was also held at Dilworth Methodist Church on 7-29-1945. His body was brought back to the US, and he was buried at Forest Lawn Cemetery on May 20, 1949.
