1994 - Rev. Cameron reclaims Genesis Park

July 18, 1994 - Rev. Cameron and activists reclaim Genesis Park.

  • Rev. Barbara Brewton Cameron and other local activists revive the area around Kenny and Person streets, once known as a haven for drug lords.
  • In the 1980s, while living in this neighborhood where her church is located, Reverend Cameron’s first husband was shot and killed.
  • Over the next decade she worked with the Charlotte Housing Partnership, Habitat for Humanity, the community police, and with local activists. Her church became a beacon of hope.
  • In a symbolic gesture, the city changes the street names of the Genesis Park neighborhood.
  • Photo shows Rev. Cameron holding the new sign. Standing at her side is her husband, Deacon Houston Cameron.
