August 12, 1984 - Chambers gets the key to the city.

  • Mayor Harvey Gantt gives the key to the city to civil rights attorney Julius Chambers. 
  • This award is presented to Chambers just before he leaves Charlotte to take over the helm of the prestigious NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund. 
  • In 1993, after nearly a decade there, he will return to North Carolina to his alma mater, NC Central University, as chancellor.
