1976 - African American Women of Charlotte Honored by UNC

December 14, 1976 - Charlotte's African American women are honored by UNC.

  • Charlotte's African American women are honored for their achievements by the University of North Carolina. 
  • Dr. Bertha Maxwell, head of the Black Studies program at the University of North Carolina, shows ten women the panels constructed in their honor at a reception at the Afro-American Cultural Center, then at Spirit Square. 
  • Honored for their "achievement despite the odds" are, left to right [1], Alice Diamond, Mildred Baxter Davis, Bertha Lewis, Sarah Stevenson, Anita Stroud, Phyllis Lynch, Kathleen Crosby, Dorothy Counts Scoggins, Carrie Graves and Julia Harshaw. Dr. Mable Parker McLean, who is absent, is also honored.
