1975 - Gantt appointed to City Council

December 16, 1975 - Gantt is appointed to the city council to serve an unexpired term.

  • Architect Harvey Gantt is appointed by the city council and is sworn in the following January. He takes the vacant seat of Fred Alexander who has been elected to the state senate. 
  • The son of a Charleston naval yard worker, Gantt was the first black student to graduate from Clemson College. His wife, Lucinda, was the second black student there. 
  • Gantt will go on to campaign and win a seat on the council the following year. 
  • Photo shows Gantt at his architectural firm.
