1974 - School Board Approves Desegregation Plan

July 1974 - The school board approves desegregation plan.

  • The Citizens Advisory Group’s desegregation plan is approved.
  • The school board asks Judge James McMillan to replace Dr. John Finger’s difficult integration plan. The judge agrees, but the board can’t come up with a plan he accepts.
  • White parents strongly object to sending their children to the formerly all-black West Charlotte High School. In addition, the board does not want to bus children from wealthy white families who might remove their children from the school system.
  • Finally, the grassroots Citizens Advisory Group proposes a plan that solves these problems. It is accepted by the judge.
