1971 - Supreme Court upholds Judge McMillan

April 20, 1971 - The Supreme Court upholds Judge McMillan’s order in the Swann case.

  • In the spring of 1969, Judge James McMillan had ordered the Charlotte-Mecklenburg school system to integrate the all-black and all-white schools by any means necessary, including busing.
  • In this final appeal, the school board loses its opportunity to reverse the Swann case decision.
  • This is the turning point for the legal push for integration of American schools.
  • Photo shows attorney Julius Chambers, who represents the Swann family.
