Military Details:
Captain William Lyman started his military career serving in WWII in Europe. While in Korea Lyman sustained wounds while in combat while in command of Company F in the fall of 1951. He returned to service from his wounds to Company H on November 30, 1951. He requested to command Company F again and was transferred January 15, 1952. On the night of January 17-18, 1952 Lyman and his Company were involved with a night raid against the Chinese. Lyman noticed during the raid noticed a squad of nine men from his company were cut off from the main column. Lyman then moved forward and engaged the enemy personally allowing his squad to withdraw successfully. As a result Lyman was mortally wounded and died while en-route to an aid station for treatment.

Lyman was managing editor of the Florence, SC Morning News and had been a reporter for the Charlotte Observer and the Charleston, SC News and Courier before that.
