Lieutenant Johnson received his commission from the Naval ROTC program at Georgia Tech in 1963 and attended flight school at the Pensacola, Florida Naval Air Station. He died in a ship fire along with 42 other men on the aircraft carrier USS Oriskany. He was scheduled to return home in December.
