Biographical Notes:
According to his letters, he originally was in a drafted army. In the 1920 census, he was 32 years old, living with his parents and sister in the Bronx selling real estate. In his letters written at Camp Greene, he mentions George and Lilly, but he does not mention his relationship to them. He may have also had a family pet named Rex.He recalled his mother had watched soldiers cleaning guns in Europe when she was a child. She may not have learned to read English because he writes that he will get another soldier to help him write a letter to his mother. Mr. Herman Wiebke may have had a real estate business. By March of 1918, his family lived at 219 E. 200th St., Bronx, NY. His friend from NY, Fred Roterman of 207 E. 40th St., sent him a package of crackers, that he shared with his fellow soldiers.
