Richard and his brother, Henry enlisted in the same company when trouble erupted with Mexico in 1916. Capt. Clarence F. Boesch recruited this company. When the trouble was over, his brother was discharged, but Richard remained in the service. He was from Providence township in Mecklenburg Co. While riding a troop train towards Long Island, he walked in his sleep and jumped out of a window on the train and died almost instantly. One of his friends, William Freeman of Matthews, saw he was asleep and tried to prevent him from jumping. Williamson was muscular and threw his friend aside. His remains were buried in the Providence Presbyterian Church cemetery.
