He was released from service in January, 1919. He was known as the oldest volunteer from Mecklenburg County to the army.He died of chronic myocarditis. He had gone to Florida for his health and died while there. The funeral was lead by Pastor Spaugh of Myers Park Moravian Church. Burial was in Elmwood Cemetery.
