First Church of Christian Scientist

The first organization of Christian Scientists in Charlotte took place in Charlotte homes in 1900. Eventually their numbers grew, and the congregation organized in 1905. Officially it became known as The First Church of Christian Scientist of Charlotte in 1911. The first church was built in 1919 on the corner of Cedar and West Trade Streets until they moved to the church seen here in 1940. It is located on East Morehead Street. Central High School

University of North Carolina at Charlotte

Located in northeast Charlotte, UNCC was founded in 1946 and achieved university status by 1965. Today thousands of students attend UNCC in preparation for bachelors, masters and some doctoral degrees Physical Description: 3x5 Publisher: Dexter Press

First Methodist Church

The First Methodist Church formed in 1927 with the merger of Tryon Street Methodist and Trinity Methodist. This particular building was completed in 1927 at a cost between $8000,000 and $900,000. Elizabeth College

Douglas Municipal Airport

The Charlotte Municpal Airport opened in 1936 under the auspices of the city of Charlotte.
During World War II, the United States Army Airforce  took over the management of the airport and established Morris Field Air Base in 1941. The airfield was used by the Third Airforce for antisubmarine patrols and training. After the war, a passenger terminal was added, and the airport was renamed the Douglas Municipal Airport in honor of Mayor Ben E. Douglas (1894-1981).
