Beneath the Garments
Beneath Everything Else They Wear…
Undergarments for children were simple one piece items known as a union suit. In the summer, they were short sleeved and light-weight. Winter weather and lack of indoor heat required a garment of heavier material such as wool, and the sleeves were long. Similar undergarments were designed for men. However, women endured a complicated series of garments that were designed to minimize the waist and enable her to wear the latest fashions that called for a slimmer figure.
