United States Post Office

Entrance to the United States Post Office in Charlotte. Between 1875 and 1917, the United States Post Office in Charlotte was located at West Trade and Mint Streets. The Shipp Monument is visible.

Governor Zebulon B. Vance's Charlotte Residence

The Charlotte residence of Zebulon B. Vance, who was both the Governor of North Carolina during the Civil war and later a United States Senator.

Osborne Oak

The Osborne Oak was located at West Trade and Graham Street. It was more than a 100 years old when this photograph was taken. The home belonged to Dr. Sam Hayes who married an Osborne.

First Presbyterian Church

First Presbyterian Church was organized in 1832. This building opened in 1895.

James K. Polk Monument

Monument marking the birthplace of President James K. Polk. It was erected by the local chapters of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Confederate Naval Yard Historic Marker

 
A state historic marker stands amidst new development in the first block of West Trade St. It marks the location of the Mecklenburg Iron Works which was leased to the Confederate Navy during the Civil War by the owner, John Wilkes. After the war, Wilkes regained ownership and operated the factory there until he sold the building to the railroad and moved operations to West Trade Street.

Arena Light Rail Tracks

300 N. College

Located in the 400 block of North College Street, this series of buildings was a former automobile service station and paint store. Since the mid 1990s, it has been a restaurant and bar. This shows the original bricks getting a coat of paint.
