Death Details/Burial/Memorial Services: He entered the Canadian Air Corps at age 19. After Pearl Harbor was attacked, he transferred to the U. S. Air Corps. He had been flying with the 27th Fighter Squadron in Italy. He was last seen when his squadron was escorting B-26 planes to a bombing mission in Italy, when they went to the aid of three P-38 planes, which were being attacked by the enemy. He was first reported as missing and was later declared dead.

Tomb enlisted in the Army Air Corps in Harrisburg, PA. At the time of his induction, he had completed four years of high school, was currently working in the oil and gas industry and was 68 inches tall and 142 pounds. He was survived by his older brother, Robert H. Tomb of Charlotte, and his mother, Mrs. Maxwell H.
