Biographical Notes: 
Stone was born in what is now Dallas, Texas. At 15, he ran away from home and went to New York City. He got a job at a bicycle shop, then left to go to Cleveland, where he became a bicycle racer. He was stationed at Camp Greene in June, 1918 and was involved in arranging boxing matches. He did a particularly good job with a wrestling match between Cyclone Moore and Young Gotch.He was given a sterling silver loving cup by the officers and enlisted men in his regiment (4th Motor Mechanics, Aviation Section) for his efforts on behalf of the Athletic Association, 6/1/1918.He was commissioned in December 1917. He was on duty at the Washington Headquarters of the Signal Corps before being assigned to the Fourth Regiment.
