He was once in the regular Army and was stationed at Ft. Shafter (1913-1914), and took part in the 5 month attempt to raise on a floating crane the U. S. submarine F4, which sank a mile and a half off-shore with 21 men on board. The crane was the largest floating crane in the world. He also served in the Mexican maneuvers in 1915-1916.
