He started working for the City of Charlotte in the City Sanitary Department in 1899. He worked there for 42 hears until illness forced him to retire in 1941. One of his main duties was to shovel gravel at the Square, during a time when Charlotte streets were not paved. When his wife died on 10/16/1939, his granddaughter moved in with him, since his own daughter was already deceased.He was an active member of his church, serving as its financial officer and helping the church buy a building on N. McDowell Street. He owned his own home, and he enjoyed gardening. All of his children went to the Lutheran College at Greensboro, as did his granddaughter.
