He served in the U. S. Army between 1898 and 1903 and later re-enlisted, when America declared war against Germany. He presided over the investigation of a Charlotte prostitute giving bichloride poison tablets to a soldier at Camp Greene.He was well known as a specialist in eye treatment before he entered the Army. His home was in Richmond, VA.He served as the C. O. of the Base Hospital at Camp Greene during some of the war. During his time at Campo Greene, his family lived on Kingston Avenue in Dilworth, Charlotte, NC.
