Our Wedding

Daisy: This picture is a picture of our wedding. It was during the height of World War II. Gerson had graduated from college and had training to go overseas. We decided that we would get married when he would have his first furlough. So this wedding was gotten together in one week.

Here I am at the wedding and holding Gerson’s hand because it’s a very heartwarming experience, and it was extremely hot that night.

Anyhow, after the wedding we got on the train and rode to Virginia for our honeymoon. And then the train we rode on to Charlottesville was Jim Crow. Well on a Southern train, first thing they put all the black people next to the engine, where all the smoke and the soot and everything could blow on you. When you got there it was so smoky and everything, you knew your clothes would be inundated with the smoke and whatever., and you sat where you could sit. So, if you can imagine sitting in one position, sitting on the suitcase: we rode on the suitcase. And that’s what happened on the night of the wedding.
