We welcomed our new archivist, Sydney Vaile, this month. She most recently was at Mt. Vernon, working with their collections, and has had experience in the National Archives in Washington as well. She got her library degree from the University of Maryland. Please stop by and introduce yourself, next time you visit the Carolina Room.

Did you ever hear that if someone did not do something, they might end up in the “Poor House?” Well, a “Poor House” was the way most counties in the country dealt with their indigent population, prior to Social Security benefits and other forms of government assistance. Mecklenburg County provided for their citizens in such a way, beginning in 1833. The Carolina Room has a new exhibit to showcase how we cared for our own. The most recent Mecklenburg County Home was located where the Carolinas HealthCare University (Atrium) and University City Library are, near the intersection of N. Tryon and W. T. Harris Blvd. The cemetery, for those residents who died while in the care of the county, is across the street in a grove of trees.

Since nursing homes, memory care units and treatment centers had not yet come of age, all residents were just indigent. Many had physical and mental health problems that led to their admission. Some married other residents, and others left with family members. We have a ledger for a limited time in the Carolina Room, that shows the dates of admission and release, or outcome of their stay. It was for men and women of all races, though segregated in their living spaces. Community groups visited, often at holidays, to bring treats and entertainment. Listen to Lois Yandle interview John Miller, the son of a former superintendent, who grew up at the Mecklenburg County Home, and observed the daily routines of his father and others working with the residents. We recently received many years of Davidson College yearbooks. We already had most issues, that could be requested. However, this nice donation makes most years now available for browsing in the public area.
