October 20, 1905 - Attorney Edward Randolph Preston hosts a meeting that begins the Greater Charlotte Club. With a motto that urges citizens to Watch Charlotte Grow, the club is a forerunner of the modern-day Chamber of Commerce.
The Charlotte Country Club was incorporated in 1910 as the Mecklenburg Country Club, but changed its name in 1917. It is located in central Charlotte.

December 31, 1959 - Charlotte city limits are greatly expanded and the city's population passes 200,000.
June 24, 1996 - The Olympic Torch comes through Charlotte. Vietnam veteran Kater Cornwell will carry it as a “community hero.”

January 15, 1959 - Senator John F. Kennedy gives the keynote speech at the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce annual dinner. He has visited Charlotte before. In 1940, he attended a wedding at the Duke mansion in Myers Park.
October 26, 1993 - The National Football League plans to create two new teams. Charlotte has promised to do whatever it takes to win an NFL franchise. Tonight, thousands of sports fans hold their breath. The announcement is made.

The Charlotte Motor Speedway is a track on the NASCAR circuit. Located between Charlotte and Concord, North Carolina, it is the site of the Coco-Cola 600 and other popular annual races.
