The Charlotte Fairgrounds as it appeared in 1909.  The Charlotte Consolidated Construction Company (the 4 C's) headed by Edward Dilworth Latta, leased a large track of land to the Mecklenburg Fair Association in 1902.

Drivers at the Pineville race track, 1926
The first 250-mile automobile race at the Charlotte Speedway took place on October 24, 1924. The one and one quarter mile, oval wooden track cost $38,000 to build and was located in Pineville, NC. The Charlotte Motor Speedway later moved to the Cabarrus County but retained the name Charlotte.

The Charlotte Observer began in 1886 when the Charlotte Chronicle started selling papers. In 1892, D.A. Tompkins and Joseph Pearson Caldwell purchased the Chronicle and renamed the paper the Daily Observer.

This is Charlotte Coliseum that was built off of Independence Boulevard in 1955. This facility was one of the finest designs of its day. In 1989, the second Charlotte Coliseum opened in 1989 off of the Billy Graham Parkway.
This is an aerial view of the Charlotte Speedway, Inc, when it was located nine miles south of Charlotte at Pineville and Park Roads, near the Southern Railway tracks. The actual track was a mile and a quarter long. It was made entirely of wooden planks and could seat 20,000 people.
