This photograph of the Friday Evening Social Club was taken about 1907. The members were schoolteachers at the Myers Street School.

Presbyterian College was located on North College Street. The school changed its name to Queens College (now university) and moved to Selwyn Avenue in the Myers Park neighborhood. Converted to apartments, this building and others have since been demolished.
Once known as Biddle University, Johnson C. Smith University is Charlotte's only historic black colleges.

At the turn-of-the-century, very few women work outside the home. The traditional jobs for professional women are teaching, nursing, and secretarial work. The majority of working class women in Charlotte work in a laundry or in textile mills.
Dr. and Mrs. Theophilus McKinney. Dr. McKinney was academic dean of Johnson C. Smith University, 1929 - 1962, and Mrs. McKinney taught English in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools.
Elizabeth College was located on Hawthorne Road. It opened in 1896. This popular school for girls remained in Charlotte until 1915.
