The Charlotte Female Academy opens. Miss Leavenworth teaches young ladies not only academic, or literal, subjects, but those such as needlework, called ornamental subjects. Tuition is $6 to $11 per term.
September 11, 1882 - Finally, tax disputes that have lasted seven years are resolved and Charlotte's Military Institute can enroll its 480 students.
December 1, 1927 - A branch of the U.S. government's banking system, called the Federal Reserve, opens in Charlotte. Not only will the Reserve Bank bring prestige to the city, the money it supplies helps local banks grow stronger.

April 1, 1930 - Mail arrives in Charlotte by airplane for the first time. Eastern Air Travel, which will become Eastern Airlines, makes the delivery as 30,000 people turn out to greet the plane. 
W.J. Cash's The Mind of the South is a landmark of American intellectual history. The author who lived on North Church Street and wrote for the Charlotte News tragically dies the same year his award-winning book is published.
July 15, 1949 - Charlotte's WBTV takes to the airwaves and becomes the first television station in the Carolinas. By 1967, there will be four other television stations: WSOC, WCCB, WTVI, and WCNC. 
The number of Asian residents in Charlotte has tripled in just the last 10 years. As the region's population becomes more diverse, the changes are reflected in the variety of ethnic stores, restaurants and shops that spring up.
The Charlotte Hornets have a great season and go the NBA playoff games. Devoted fans are overjoyed, especially for Tyrone Muggsy Bogues. At 5'3, he is the shortest player in the NBA.Muggsy Bogues

Daddy Grace's casket arrives in Charlotte
January 18, 1960 - Bishop C.M. "Daddy" Grace dies. Brought by train, his casket arrives in Charlotte to be viewed by thousands of his grief-stricken followers.
May 13, 1964 - Charlotte minister and dentist Reginald Hawkins starts a protest at the YMCA, which excludes blacks from its membership. After protests and lawsuits, the YMCA board changes its policy.
April 4, 1968 - Martin Luther King, Jr. is assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee by James Earl Ray. Marchers demonstrate in downtown Charlotte after King's death.

December 12, 1971 - Charlotte dentist and Presbyterian minister Dr. Reginald Hawkins runs for Governor on the Democratic ballot. Four years earlier, he had become the first black to run for governor in North Carolina.
October 15, 1974 - Charlotte becomes "The City that Made Integration Work."
