Henry Edward Cowen Bryant
(January 3, 1873 - November 3, 1967)

H.E.C. "Red Buck" Bryant, the son of Julia Parks and Henry Bryant, was a native of Mecklenburg's Providence Township.

Though "Red Buck" Bryant wrote several small books, among them a biography of Charlotte Observer editor, J.P. Caldwell and a short history of Providence Presbyterian Church up to 1846, his major work was newspaper journalism.

After attending Agricultural and Mechanical College, now North Carolina State University, in Raleigh, and later graduating from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, he joined the staff of the Charlotte Observer.

He began his newspaper career as a reporter. He worked as the Observer's Washington correspondent and as a columnist. Throughout his career H.E.C. Bryant worked for several newspapers including the New York Herald and the Boston Globe, during which time he gained a national reputation.

He retired to his home in Providence Township and lived there until his death in 1967 at the age of 94.
