- Charlotte Chronicle
Published from March, 1886 to March, 1892, name varies, by W. S. Hemby, as a competitor to the Daily Charlotte Observer (1869-1872). The Chronicle became the Charlotte Daily Observer in March, 1892, shortly after it was purchased by DA Tompkins and Joseph Caldwell. It continues to this day as the Charlotte Observer.

This was the title of the Charlotte Observer from 1892-1916. The "daily" was dropped unannounced.
- Charlotte Democrat
Published weekly in Charlotte beginning Dec. 1870 thru Oct 1897, many issues missing. Edited by J. P. Strong and Wm. J. Yates. Name changed to Charlotte Home & Democrat from Oct 1881 thru July 1887. Marriages and deaths from Mecklenburg and surrounding counties are included in this index. Some index cards of events in 1870-1880’s give the source newspaper as the Charlotte Democrat, even though it was known as the Charlotte Home and Democrat at the time.
The Western Democrat was published in Charlotte from Jan 28, 1853 to Nov. 1870. W. J. Yates was editor in Nov. 1870 when, after a fire, the name abruptly changed to Charlotte Democrat.

The Charlotte Democrat was published weekly in Charlotte beginning Dec. 1870 thru Oct 1897, many issues missing. Edited by J. P. Strong and Wm. J. Yates. Name changed to Charlotte Home & Democrat from Oct 1881 thru July 1887. Marriages and deaths from Mecklenburg and surrounding counties are included in this index. - Charlotte Observer
Vital records abstracted from late March to early April, 1892. The paper, begun as the Charlotte Chronicle in 1886, is published daily at present.
- Miners and Farmers Journal
Established as a weekly in Charlotte, NC on Sept. 27, 1830, it ran until June 1835. It was published by Thomas J. Holton. The name changed to Charlotte Journal in 1835, and North Carolina Whig in 1852. Not all issues have survived. Marriages, deaths, and some legal notices for Mecklenburg County are included in this index. Some entries for surrounding counties are also included. Legal notices include such items as estate settlements, divorce and dissertion, slave notes, business news, real estate sales, and military muster calls.

The index contains abstracts of death and marriage notices appearing from December, 1857 to March, 1858. Published by Thomas Holton in Charlotte from 1852 until November 1860 when he was reported injured. His wife continued as publisher until 1863.
