There are two major exhibits in the Main Library/Carolina Room this year. One has been up for several months, as it commemorates Charlotte’s World War I Army presence, Camp Greene, (1917-1918) and the upcoming centennial anniversary of the Armistice (11/11/2018). The next exhibit coming soon celebrates Charlotte’s 250th birthday. If you haven’t been to the Main Library lately, I hope you will stop by and see some interesting artifacts. I guarantee you will learn and see something new!

We recently said goodbye to NCR Librarian Hannah Cox.  She has taken a fabulous archivist job in another state, and we miss her and wish her well in her career.

The new version of www.cmstory.org was launched recently.  It was redone at the request of our Web Services Dept. to make it more user friendly on mobile devices. We still have a few problems that need to be resolved.  So, if you visit the site and find something that is not satisfactory, we would appreciate the feedback.  It has hundreds of pages, and it takes a long time to figure out what did not go well in the conversion.  We noticed the death dates in the cemetery database did not make the redesign, so Web Services is working on now.  So, please contact us if you find things we need to fix.

Our collection has been growing by leaps and bounds!  We have just hit 78,925 cataloged items.  As you can see from the list below, the Midwest is getting better representation.

To search the Library’s entire collection, please visit https://www.cmlibrary.org/.  To learn more about library services and programs, go to https://cmlibrary.org/services.  These materials were added to our collection between 3/15/2018 and 4/12/2018:

The world recently mourned the loss of Rev. Billy Graham, Charlotte’s most famous citizen.  We have books by and about Rev. Graham.  This month, we added 2 more.

Charlotte will be turning 250 years old later this year.  Have you or groups you belong to thought of  ways to celebrate?  It is a great time to start planning.  Contributing $250 to your favorite charity, doing 250 hours of volunteer work, getting children to save 250 pennies, helping put together a block party, or organizing a fun event with those you work or meet with on a regular basis are just a few suggestions.  So think big and start a CLT250 celebration plan for you, family, neighbors and friends that is memorable.  Those who had relatives here 250 years ago might want to take some time to share stories of heritage with other family members.  The city will also be sponsoring events, so watch for more news to come about how you can participate.

In honor of women’s history month, we added a few titles by women and about women, some a little on the shady and industrious side of femininity!

It’s tax season, and you may be looking for stories about companies and their stocks. Have you had relatives who died and may have obituaries in the New York Times?  If so, visit a new online product covering 6/1/1980-present. To access it, please visit cmlibrary.org.  Click on the pink box, “Resources.”  Scroll down until you see “New York Times,” then click on “Access Now.”  You will need to put your library card number in a box when prompted.   There are lots of other resources available with just a click of your mouse, if you have a Charlotte Mecklenburg library card.  Be sure to also check out HeritageQuest, a genealogy web product, which is free with your library card.

Here is a link to a free genealogy newsletter.  http://www.genealogyintime.com/

Although some of the sites they select are subscription based, it gives the reader an idea of what new material is being placed online.
