Charlotte Street

Since 1889, society has been blessed with the technology to capture images on photographic film. George Eastman’s invention revolutionized how history was recorded by both amateurs and professionals. Easier production of photographs greatly enhanced the newspaper industry’s ability to bring information to its readers.

Just as technology has advanced exponentially, so too has Charlotte seen phenomenal changes during the last 40 years. Many of these changes have been captured by the Charlotte Observer photographers during the course of their day-to-day work.

“Charlotte - A Work in Progress” represents but a snapshot of the changes that have made the Queen City the major metropolitan city it is today. The transformation of Charlotte was facilitated by people and their work. These images compare and contrast yesterday and today. They show where we have been and perhaps point to the future.

Photographs capture and convey a wealth of information. One image can inform the viewer about architecture, clothing, transportation, lifestyle and even the weather. Additionally, photographs can entertain, inspire or tickle a memory. Unlike interpretive media such as painting, photographs capture the facts.
