This project was started in 1999 by the staff in the Carolina Room of the Public Library of Charlotte and Mecklenburg Co., NC. It is the first directory to attempt to include all cemeteries in Mecklenburg Co., NC. Although some works have been printed or published on cemeteries in the county, they have only focused on a few. Burial records of some cemeteries were added in August 2003. Because of the enormity of this project, more burial records will be added in the future. Please visit our site again!
All information from Known Cemeteries of Mecklenburg County, NC is supplied "as is." Use of all information is at the user's sole risk. The Public Library of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County does not assume responsibility for the accuracy of records given to us by churches, businesses and volunteers, the transcription or the information on the stones themselves.
A variety of sources has been used to complete this work regarding cemeteries, funeral homes and stone cutters in Mecklenburg Co. from maps, books, newspaper articles, city directories, researchers, land owners, business owners, Internet sites, and physical evidence. It should serve as a reference tool for genealogists, historians, archaeologists, property owners and land developers.
All photographs of the cemeteries, stones, funeral homes and stone cutters and tools are the property of the Robinson-Spangler Carolina Room unless indicated otherwise.

It is important to respect those interred as well as their families. Many of these cemeteries are on private property. Hopefully this project will help people locate cemeteries or some of their family members in the least intrusive way to the property owners. This may also eliminate needless searching and the destruction of the cemetery environment because ground cover is often the only visible sign for old, abandoned cemeteries.
The main research work and cemetery photographs were finished in 9/2001. Information will be added as new cemeteries are discovered and additional history is learned as well as time permits and information is available concerning burial records. This site will never contain all information about persons buried in Mecklenburg County. Many sites have unmarked graves, some stones have been moved to other locations and many have unreadable markers. There is also limited time and research to record all burials. Some books have been published concerning Mecklenburg burial records and will give you more information. If you have additional information about cemeteries in Mecklenburg Co., please contact us at cmstory@plcmc.org.
