The Brooklyn neighborhood of downtown Charlotte was the center of the city’s black community from the late 1800s until it was razed as part of the urban renewal programs of the 1960s and 70s. This "Second City" was home to hundreds of families, businesses, schools and churches.

Explore Brooklyn as it was in the 1950s.

Alexander St. and 4th St. Many of Brooklyn's streets remained unpaved and without sewer services into the 1960s. Close inspection of this photo will show unpaved streets and outhouses.

The area shown here became part of Earle Village, downtown Charlotte's low-rise housing project.
