Second Ward High School was the city's first black high school. Students from all over Mecklenburg County attended the school until West Charlotte High was built in 1938. The school was closed as part of the city's integration plan in 1969. The gym is now incorporated into the Metro School complex. |

The
Savoy Theatre, 508 S. McDowell St. The Savoy Theatre was opened in 1935 as the Royal Theatre. It was the largest black movie house in Charlotte with over 700 seats. The Savoy continued to show feature films and live acts until 1963. |
