1968 - Jackie Harrison graduates from predominantly white Harding High School.
Jackie Harrison serves as features editor on the all-white Harding High School yearbook staff. In later years, this National Merit semi-finalist would earn even more recognition as the first black woman elected sheriff in the US. Like other black students, Harrison needed to get special permission from the school board to attend Harding. This method of desegregation is called "freedom of choice" and places a few hundred black students in all-white schools.
